THE SALAD BAR TOOL!

April 26th, 2012

I love salads, but like any other “healthy” meal or food the wrong ingredients or the wrong serving sizes can turn a salad into a diet disaster!  Luckily, I found a great new tool that can help you make a salad and keep track of how many calories, carbs, fats and proteins, are going in it! The new salad bar tool on the Women’s Health magazine website allows you to add ingredients into your virtual bowl and track your stats.  Check it out at http://www.womenshealthmag.com/nutrition/build-your-own-salad. It’s amazing and even has recipes!

And a “Dressing on the side” note…  Everyone knows that salad dressings are usually where all the calories and fat are hidden.  One of my personal favorite things to do for dressing is to get a side of fresh lemons and squeeze one or two over the salad.  Then get a side of olive oil and splash on a half of tablespoon to finish it off.  You should never be afraid to ask for sauces of dressings on the side when eating out.  Restaurants usually have a heavy hand, and getting it spate gives you the control and allows you to taste more of your actual food.  If you like dressing but still want a tossed salad, ask if they can “go light” on the dressing.  Clarify by asking them to toss the salad with half the amount of dressing that they usually use

Cheers!

Alisha Spencer: Jewelry & Accessories Editor

An accessory made from unconventional material always seems to catch my eye and Meredith Wendell jewelry did just that. An Italian made collection constructed of bold colored stained glass and solid brass hardware that is both sophisticated yet unexpected. She uses abstract shape and design to create a wearable form of art. Belts and handbags are also a part of the collection with vivid color that pops adding modern and unique style to your wardrobe.

I’M TAKIN ABOUT ZINC BABY!

April 21st, 2012

Zinc is a trace mineral which is essential because we can’t make it ourselves. If we don’t eat enough, deficiency signs and symptoms appear. Shockingly, studies have revealed that about 75% of the population in Western nations have sub-optimal zinc intakes. The average intake is about 8-10 mg a day whereas the optimal amount is 15-50 mg zinc a day, depending on the amount of zinc you are losing every day, through your stool, urine and sweat; a quantity which varies from person to person. For example drinking coffee and alcohol, as well as smoking are all activities which increase excretion of zinc, along with excessive exercise and stress.

First up… I would like to point out that a Zinc deficiency can create havoc on your sex life. Yes! No Zinc… no sex. A Zinc deficiency will dampen our ability to produce testosterone by up to 62%. Taking 25mg a day can help normalize our testosterone levels within a three month period.

Benefit 1: It helps Build and Repair our Cells and Tissues

Benefit 2: Zinc helps maintain strong healthy bones

Benefit 3: New cell growth and helps keep skin looking healthy

Benefit 4: Keeps hair shiny and nail strong

Benefit 5: Zinc keeps the cell layers internal surfaces in good condition

Benefit 6: Builds immune cells to protect us from disease

Benefit 7: Essential for fertility in both men and women

Benefit 8: Get’s the nasty chemicals out! Zinc is amazing at detoxing the body

Benefit 9: Digestion…. Helps digest our food

Benefit 10: Helps us feels energetic and vibrant

The list goes on…. I’m sure I had you at sex!!

TAKE ZINC!!

6 AMAZING PROTEIN SOURCES….

April 20th, 2012

Miss Beau Dunn is a chicken addict. Period, end of story. With the amount of hormones in our chicken supply and the conditions of most chicken farms (just google it), this mother hen (me) is trying to find alternatives for her protein sources.

Proteins are broken down in the stomach to provide amino acids, which in turn do everything from forming skin, organs, blood cells, and the immune system… to creating hormones and neurotransmitters. There are 23 different types of amino acid, found in all foods. Eight of these, known as essential amino acids, must be obtained from food. The body breaks these down to manufacture the remaining 15, which are called nonessential. The protein containing foods that provide essential aminos are known as complete proteins, and the others as incomplete. All animal proteins are complete, but I have found non animal alternatives that I wanted to share with you today…..

1. QUINOA…. Quinoa is a wholegrain that is an amazing source of protein. Now available in most supermarkets, cooked or raw, this nutty flavored grain like seed has 11g’s of protein per cup.

2. TEMPEH…. A fermented relative of tofu. 4 ounces pack a whopping 24g’s of Protein. Served over brown rice or pasta mixed with vegetables makes for a healthy meal.

3. BEETROOT…. Low in calories and rich in antioxidants… a complete protein that helps promote liver function. Six small beetroots equal one chicken fillet.

4. LENTILS…. With 17g’s of protein per cup, this tasty and nutritious protein source is great hot or cold. Sold at Trader Joe’s pre-cooked, lentils are a fast food on the run.

5. SPIRULINA….. This Blue Green Algae is a complete protein contains all essential amino acids. 60% protein makes this plant based protein a powerhouse natural food that is an amazing add in to any smoothie. 6g’s of protein in 10 grams.

6. HEMP SEEDS…. Another amazing source of complete protein with the added benefit of the perfect ration of Omega-6 and Omega-3 EFA’s. Throw is salads, rice, smoothies, vegetables or on their own. 16g’s of protein in 3 tablespoons.

This is just a start…. Over the course of the next two weeks we will be bringing you other amazing non animal protein sources that will help keep our bodies fueled with life sustaining vital nutrient.

The scale never lies….

April 19th, 2012

Or does it?

In my experience, dieters often want to weight themselves several times a week, if not several times a day.  Everyone wants to see progress and see their hard work pay off.  This can actually be counterproductive.  Your body weight can fluctuate 3 to 5 pounds during the day.  It is also not uncommon to see fluctuation from day to day due to shifts in water weight, hydration, hormones, and digestion.  At execuSlim, we insist our patients are weighted only once a week.  It’s important to look at the overall down trend of weight loss, and give your body a chance to lose without obsessing over any movement on the scale.  Don’t let the scale rule your diet, instead use how your cloths are fitting to guide you.   Jump on a scale once a week or once every two weeks to track your progress.

Cheers,

Dana

HOLI COLOR FESTIVAL

April 16th, 2012

Every year, Hindus greet the turn of winter into spring with a rush of color….in some areas, a massive geyser of color. They call their celebration the festival of Holi, and Hindus across India and throughout the world share prayer, camaraderie, special food, and a general sense of freedom as they splash special rose scented bags of colored chalk on each other and about the festival grounds.

Miss Beau Dunn and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to The Sri-Sri-Radha Krsna Temple in Salt Lake City on Saturday to par-take in the most amazing Festival of Color. Usually celebrated on the last full moon day of the lunar month….. this one was a Krishna Birthday celebration…. And did not let us down.  Good Bye Winter and hello Spring…. Let the colors fly!

Restaurants can mean…..

April 12th, 2012

36% more calories!

According to a recent study, most individuals consume 36% more calories at a restaurant than they do when eating at home. Here are a few tips that can help you keep the added calories to a minimum:

Just say no…

To the bread that is, ask your server to remove the bread from the table. Each piece can have 100 calories or more.

Go Green
It’s very hard to overeat vegetables. If your meal comes with fries, rice, or a heavy side, ask if you can swap it for steamed green veggies such as broccoli or brussels sprouts.

Stick to the Side
Ask for sauces and salad dressings on the side. That way, you can add them as needed and avoid the excessive amounts most restaurants use

Sharing is Caring!

Most restaurants serving sizes are all wrong.  Try splitting dishes with a friends or choosing two or three appetizers to share.  This will help keep you from over eating or feeling like you have to finish everything on your plate since it’s not just your plate.

Cheers!

MUSTARD THIS!

April 10th, 2012

Burn body and belly fat quicker with mustard seeds! Eating just one teaspoon with meals helps your body melt calories by an extra 25 percent…. and the burn lasts for hours after consumption. Compounds in the seeds increase blood flow to muscles, helping to burn more fat more efficiently. Mustard activates our bodies “good” fat to actually torch calories to generate body heat.

Enjoy your tuna and chicken salads with mustard rather than mayonnaise…. And watch as the pounds slide away!

I <3 MY TEETH!

April 9th, 2012

Yes My Beautiful Peeps!! I love my teeth and so must you! A study concluded that Taiwanese adults who had their teeth professionally cleaned at least once during a seven year period were 24 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack and were 13 percent less prone to have a stoke than those who did not have their teeth cleaned. And the more often they had their teeth cleaned the lower their risk.

Brush teeth twice daily for at least two minutes at a time and floss for 5 minutes. Have your teeth professionally cleaned (at minimum) once a year…. twice is better. And load up on green tea daily! The anti-inflammatory properties will help reduce the effect of bacteria on your teeth and gums. All the above will help reduce the risk of bacteria slipping into your bloodstream via diseased teeth and gums!! YAY for clean teeth!!

CLEAN TEETH + GUMS = GREAT HEART HEALTH

Art Decolicious

April 8th, 2012

Alisha Spencer: Jewelry & Accessories Editor

Andrea Fohrman spent her childhood years surrounded by the picturesque canyons of Northern California, which has been an inspiration for her charming jewelry designs. The juxtaposition between antique and modern style has evolved into jewelry creations she describes as “ pieces that (I) can wear today or take out and wear twenty years from now…” The balance of color and symmetry is instilled with classic style reminding us of the Victorian and Art Deco eras that give each piece a brilliant, distinctive elegance.

EASTER FACTS

April 7th, 2012

  • More than 16 billion jelly beans are made for Easter. If you lined them all side-by-side, they would circle the Earth nearly three times. It’s also enough to completely fill a nine-story office building.

  • To help Americans in need, egg farmers across the country are donating more than 11 million eggs to food banks across the nation.

  • Not cooking this Easter? You are not alone. According to the National Restaurant Association, more than 33 million Americans are expected to celebrate the Easter holiday by dining out.

  • Ninety million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter each year. Adults prefer milk chocolate (65%) over dark chocolate (27%).

  • Children’s favorite jelly bean  flavors are cherry (20%), strawberry (12%), grape (10%), lime (7%), and blueberry (6%).

  • Americans spend an average of $1.9 billion on Easter candy every year.

  • The 10 most popular things gave up for lent include alcohol, chocolate and sweets, cursing,  Facebook, television, junk food, pop, smoking, texting and gossiping.

  • You know those wire egg dippers that come in the egg coloring kits (and never work)? If you lay all of them from end-to-end, they would equal the height of 6,628 Washington Monuments.

  • It takes 24-26 hours for a hen to complete the process of laying an egg…..South American Ameraucana and Araucan chickens can lay colored eggs in hues of green, blue, or pink.
